Our talented customer Lauren Samu transformed the blah, beige ceramic tile floor in her laundry room with bright and bold paint color scheme and our popular Mandala Fusion tile stencil. She was kind enough to document her fail-safe process for stenciling tile floors so we can share it and you can do it too!
Stencil and Floor Painting Supplies:
See our How to Stencil Tile Floors Blog Post for further details and tips on painting and stenciling tile floors.
Good surface preparation is the key to stenciled tile success. Clean the floor well with diluted bleach, sand lightly, and clean again. Prime the clean floor with Kilz Primer for Kitchen and Bath. This is a bonding primer that is formulated to stick to glossy surfaces-like ceramic tiles!
Base coat the floor with 2 coats of Shadow Mountain. Note: Lauren prefers to use Cabinet and Trim enamel because it's designed for maximum durability. The finish will be hard and shiny so it may be a bit more challenging for stenciling. You can choose to substitute a good quality latex paint, such as Behr Dynasty in a flat finish.
After your floor has dried for at least a day, gather your stencil supplies. Lauren chose to use a lot of different colors of paint to create a truly custom stencil finish, but you can use the paint colors of your choice. The Mandala Fusion Tile Stencil looks good in so many different colorways-even just using ONE color of paint.
Note that Lauren stenciled the entire floor with full repeats first and then cut the stencil at the end to fit in and stencil the spaces around the edges easily. If you don't plan to use your stencil for other future projects, this is the easiest way to finish off the floor. If you want to preserve your stencil, see this post on How to Stencil Corners, Floors, and Ceiling Lines.
Seal the stenciled floor surface with 2 coats of water-based polyurethane. You can choose a satin or semi-gloss finish depending on your preference.
You may still hate doing laundry, but you will surely love your floor after stenciling!

Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts motifs, decorating styles, and wall stencils are having a renaissance, and we are definitely here for it.
This highly ornamental, sinuous and sensual style of design developed as an antidote to the hyper-industrialization and mass production of items in the late 1800’s.
Art Nouveau style was born from the concept that beauty could and should be brought into everyday life through art and design-and it’s a concept that is just as important today!
We are in love with the Art Nouveau design style and are adding this elegant new floral wall stencil pattern to our Art Deco/Art Nouveau/Craftsman stencil collection and need your help finding the perfect name for this beauty.
Please leave your stencil name suggestion in the comments. If we select yours you will win the first copy of this new Art Nouveau stencil pattern. Contest closes Wednesday at midnight, October 11, 2023
Good luck!
Flourish Wall Stencil - @moncada88
When it comes to stenciling, there is not brainer than to use royal design. I was able to completed my second project thanks to their product and the many options they have. I brought back our outdated guess room back to life and I couldn’t be happier with the outcome and best part it’s super easy to use their stencil.
Starburst Tile Stencil - @aczordan
Allysa used our Starburst Tile Stencil to add a whimsical pattern to this enclosed porch. Painting over the old grey painted floorboards with a peach color and doing a two-tone stencil pattern makes this pattern pup approved!
Lisabetta Damask Wall Stencil - Phyllis Webb
It has been a couple years since my daughter and I did this transformation on the small half bath in her then, new Townhome. She made a couple more changes that elevated the look even more, changing out the faucet to black, and more gorgeous warm wooden, black and platinum colored accessories, a series of five old black/white equestrian prints hung in a single row on the wall to the right! The room is a little gem! We began by painting the walls a soft black (SW Iron Ore), then stenciled the walls in a platinum silver (I think it was Martha Stewart craft paint. Can’t remember for sure). The cabinets were an Annie Sloan soft black with some distressing. A few other painted accessories to match. Including the costs of the stencil, paint, brushes, new light fixtures AND new faucet, I think the entire project was under $200.00. This was a first stenciling project for both of us, and will not be the last! I wouldn’t suggest this large a pattern to someone else as a beginner, I have a little advantage that I am an artist. There are six corners and the space was tight and somewhat challenging… often, I would freehand to complete an area, ie, behind the toilet, and the tight space beside the mirror.
BUT… I think it was a success!
We should have taken more pictures of the totally finished room… she and her new husband have recently moved and she has rented this home to a trusted friend.
My name is Phyllis Webb and my daughter’s name is Hannah Webb Ward.
Your stencils are incredibly beautiful, durable, easy to use … timeless and modern!
Love love your product!
Loose Weave Wall Stencil - Ellen Backman
For quite a while I have been wanting to redo my room and bring in something fresh and new. When I saw your Loose Weave Stencil it was just the thing I needed to get started. In particular, I loved the idea photo on your website that used this stencil on a canvas with a yellow border on the top. I ran with that idea and here is the final result. This is my third project in my house and not only have they turned out great, I really enjoy the process! Thank you!
Adelaide Wall Stencil - Colleen Stevens
I didn’t want to spend let’s of money to have my front porch look like a garage. I came across an ad for your stencils and after some research into concrete paint and trying to choose my design, I settled on this one and really upped the beauty of our little 60’s ranch house front porch. It looks beautiful. So happy
Modern Moroccan Souk - @tinarath
I returned from a magnificent trip to Morocco and found our bedroom to be very dull indeed. After placing two of the rugs I brought back, the room felt even more incomplete. Soooooo, enter the Moroccan Souk stencil, a textile I also purchased in Marrakesh and Voila! A little Moroccan heaven in California.
Chunky Cable Knit Stencil - Sunayna Johnson
I spruced up an old concrete patio with some paint and stenciling. I really wanted an outdoor rug-like look… but decided to paint a rug instead of dealing with the hassles of an outdoor rug. I used the Chunky Cable Knit stencil to achieve the outdoor rug look!
Base paint: Behr BXC-41 Charcoal Textured Low-Luster Enamel Interior/Exterior Porch and Patio Anti-Slip Floor Paint Stencil paint: Glidden Porch and Floor paint PPG1021-1 Off White Stain Interior/Exterior Anti-Skid Porch and Floor Paint with Cool Surface Technology.
Sealer: Behr Premium Low Luster Sealer
Floral Firework Wall Stencil - Margie Sanford
I wanted something fun and special for this small powder room in our new vacation house. I looked for wallpaper but couldn’t find anything I liked and didn’t want to spend hundreds of dollars. I love this stencil, Floral Fireworks, especially how you stencil the background, not the flowers. The pattern is easy to stencil and very forgiving. The hardest part was working around the toilet, light fixture and light switch. I LOVE the way it turned out and my friends and family are impressed.
Country Floral Tile Stencil - Eileen Kohler
This was my FIRST stencil project. As you could see in the photos, the entry way to my front door in was just dull and drab painted concrete. So I decided to make it look like Spanish tile. I came across Royal Design Studio Stencils online and knew this would do the trick.
I purchased the 3/4”, the 3/8”, and the 1” stencil brushes. The paint colors were Peacock, Patina Green, and Copper Kettle Royal Stencil Crème Paints. The stencil was your New Country Floral 12x12. I was amazed that one jar of each color did the entire project.
The project took me about a week to complete, because I didn’t want to put the stencil on top of wet paint. So I stair stepped the painting process. In the end, I sealed the floor with polyurethane using a paint roller.
The fun part about it is, when the setting sun hits the paint, the colors change from dark to vibrant sparkles. My neighbors want me to do theirs now! Giggles. Thank you again for your amazing products !!!
Mansion House Trellis Stencil - Randi Garrett
I just finished our master bedroom makeover (minus a few more artwork additions).
I repainted all the walls and stenciled one as an accent wall. I used the Mansion House Grille Trellis wall stencil and Antique Gold stencil creme for this wall.
For the tray ceiling, I first painted it with "medieval gold" from Lowes and then did an overlay with your Antique Gold stencil creme for a golf leaf type appearance.
I love how it all came together and really loved how well your paint and stencils worked!
Palladium Tile Stencil - Jana Nicole
In May I discovered the toilet was leaking in the half bath of my 1932 house. After pulling up 2 layers of flooring and getting to the original oak floor I discovered it had stains from water damage. I stained the floor a dark brown but lots of flaws stood out so I decided to stencil it. I am really happy with the results!
Starburst Tile Stencil – Courtney Hughes
We moved into our home two years ago and I always just didn’t like our front porch floor! It was chipped and stained and totally off color. It was on my bucket list and I finally did it.
I used a concrete caulk to fix the front of the broken brick tile then did a light sand and power wash. Ashley Petrone @arrowsandbow was my first inspiration to stencil and then I followed Bre Bartollini’s @brepurposed DIY stenciled porch makeover as my go to instructions from her blog. I used Ace hardware Royal porch and floor paint in Black Chiffon color for the base and then I used the same paint in Bone White color and applied with the stencil brush using the Royal design studio stencil. To finish and protect my hard work, I then did 2 coats of water based matte diamond clear finish sealer. Husband and kids approved plus ready for summer!
Starlight Wall Stencil - Heather O’Donnell
I saw your starry stencil, fell in love, and had to have it!
So, this is my office wall … plain white to start!
I wanted my office to be a warm, relaxing space to be productive in.
And viola! After 5 hours of stenciling a champagne metallic paint … it came out perfect!
@rustichomesweethome created a sweet concrete patio space by stenciling the Floral Fireworks stencil in a simple, chic white on gray color scheme. The fun red accent pillow is the cherry on top!
This sunny yellow kitchen stenciling by @littlemissmidcentury with the Floral Fireworks stencil really warms up the room and adds a funky vibe to her vintage kitchen.
The Floral Fireworks stencil works for furniture stenciling as well! Melanie Mathewes gave an old oak dresser a total makeover by first painting the drawers black and then adding stenciling in a crisp white.
Want to paint and stencil a pretty powder room? @inmyownstyle brought the style to the Floral Fireworks stencil by stenciling it over white walls in a luscious cornflower blue color. So fresh!
@thetatteredpew went for a graphic modern look with her stenciling by using black over a white wall. The hot pink accents on the curtains add some extra punch. So fun!
Did you catch the Floral Fireworks stencil stenciled on the frame AS WELL AS the wall?? Melissa Ligon got creative by adding that extra pop of color and got double duty out of her stencil pattern.
Stenciling an accent wall is an easy way to add a stencil pattern to your home in a matter of hours. Stenciling in white over a blue background really makes the floral stencil stand out.
Try stenciling in metallic for a completely different stencil look. Laura Meshwork used our Antique Gold Royal Stencil Creme over a deep pinky coral paint to create this beautiful wallpaper look behind an upholstered bed.
A funky version of the Floral Fireworks stencil by Guenther Design Group shows the playful side of stenciling on this tone on tone turquoise wall.
Another blue and white version of the Floral Fireworks stencil-but this time just on an accent wall behind the toilet by Bethany Limmer. So fast, fresh and easy!
One of our favorite all-time star stencil projects! Tiffany Holesovsky to creative stenciling to the next level by playing with breaking up the stencil pattern of the Moroccan Starry Night Star stencil as it moves up the wall. She also introduced some fun accent colors into various star throughout the stencil. Just so jealous of this stenciled wall!
Our popular Star Quilt Tile Stencil is the STAR of this kitchen floor stenciled makeover. Like many of our Tile Stencils Collection, the Star Quilt Stencil is designed in standard tile sizes to make it easy for you to stencil an upgrade over existing floor tiles.
Use a star tile stencil like our whimsical Starburst Tile Stencil to give your porch an extra pop of personality like Julie Mascorro did. Bonus points if you incorporate fun stencil paint colors like hot pink!
Kirsten Lissa and her husband tackled a majorly UGLY bathroom and mastered the art of magical transformation with our popular Starz Tile Stencil, come tile bonding paint, sealer and a weekend's worth of painting and stenciling.
Melissa Jaeger-Miller stenciled our Moroccan Starry Night Star Stencil in a rich, deep blue tone on a stenciled bathroom floor project. The fresh blue and white color scheme is SUCH an improvement over the old "big box" floor tile and the blue is the perfect color for this star stencil treatment.
And last but definitely not least, this screened in porch stencil transformation with our Star Quilt Tile Stencil checks all the boxes: crisp black and white stencil color scheme, adding pattern and personality to a useable living space, and using a classic tile stencil pattern to make it liveable and lasting for years to come.
We hope you enjoyed seeing some of our most popular STAR STENCILS in action.

Star Quilt Tile Stencil by @berryberryquitecontrary
Kayla’s Stencil Story:
“Happy!! Happy!! Happy!! Ahhh this front porch stencil design makes me SO happy!!!! Oh my gosh, I knew I would really like it, I just don’t think I knew how much of an impact the stenciling would make.”
Kayla’s Porch Painting Process:
Scrape and sand off any peeling paint. Roll on your base color (Kayla used Behr Porch & Patio Floor Paint in white with black for stenciling. Stencil the stencil pattern with a stencil brush (brushes are easier) and be sure to offload excess paint on a paper towel.
Visit Kayla’s Blog Post for more details on how she Transformed Her Porch with Stencils.
Starz Tile Stencil- @julianna.welty
Julianna’s Stencil Story:
“Our 1920s bungalow porch received a big makeover (at a small price tag) using Royal Stencil’s Star Tile Stencil (Large, 12” x 12”). I love the results and am excited to enjoy my porch this summer!”
Julianna’s Porch Painting Process:
“First, I cleaned and sanded the entire porch, paying extra attention to areas that chipped from previous owner’s paint job.
After drying, we painted the entire surface using Sherwin Williams SuperDeck (Solid) in the color HGSW2502 (Equestrian Brown). This required two coats and 1.5 gallons of paint.
After the drying overnight, we used Sherwin Williams Porch and Floor Enamel in the color HGSW3084 (Mushroom Market) to stencil. We tried both rollers and stencil brushes, but had the best results using a stencil brush.
After allowing to dry, we went back through with the stencil paint color to do touch ups with an small angled brush. The stenciling part of the porch painting required less than a quart of paint.”
Intertwined Stencil by @meghan_beltran3
Meghan’s Stencil Story:
“I cannot help but sit back and feel so proud of this project. It’s truly amazing what some hard work and paint can do to a space.”
Meghan’s Porch Painting Process:
Meghan prepped the concrete porch surface by power-washing and letting it dry completely. For the paint she used Behr Masonry, Stucco & Brick Paint for the basecoat and stenciling. Meghan used a stencil brush instead of a paint roller. “It takes a longer, but you’ll get more crisp lines! Be sure to offload the paint before stenciling-You can always add more before you remove the stencil but you can’t take it away.” After everything dried she sealed the stenciled porch with 2 coats of Behr Low-Luster Sealer for Concrete.

We are in love with the results."
You’re a Star Tile Stencil by @thesassybarn
Ashlee’s Stencil Story:
“I’m a DIY winger…meaning I just go for it and hope for the best! Our porch needed some love, and with a little concrete patch, paint and a stencil, I’d say it got the love!”
Ashlee’s Porch Painting Process:
Ashlee’s 1949 concrete porch needed some repairs before painting. She started by using Sakrete Fast Setting Cement Patcher to fill in the holes and rough areas. For the base paint she had Behr Low Lustre Enamel Porch & Patio Floor Paint tined to Whisper White and applied two coats overall.
The You’re a Star Tile Stencil was stenciled on the porch landing area with a the color Putty from Fusion Mineral Paint which is a paint and topcoat in one. To complete her stenciled porch transformation Ashlee sprayed over the stenciled stars with Flex Seal Clear Spray to protect them further
Intuition Allover stencil by Linda Roberts
Linda’s Stencil Story:
"We had a pad outside our casita sliding doors that was begging for some Royal stencil Love! My daughter had recently been to Rome Italy and shared pictures of the Roman Bath mosaic floors. That was my inspiration. I was hooked on many of Royal Stencil patterns but Intuition pulled at my heart!”
Duomo Tile Stencil by Renee Silk
Renee’s Stencil Story:
"This project was so much fun. The layers of color transformed this concrete porch! I painted this together with a friend of mine and thankful for her help, as it was a large porch! We first painted with Terra Cotta Porch Paint then stenciled with Duomo Tile Stencil in size large. The mailman was happy to see progress made during delivery all week! "
Are you inspired to tackle you own porch with a paint and stencil project? Here are the basic steps to create your own Porch Stencil Story :
Concrete Surface Prep:
It’s super important to start with a clean and sound surface. Remove and chipping paint and fill any cracks or gouged areas with a concrete patching product.
Ideally you should power-wash the surface, but at the very least wash and scrub well with a stiff-bristled brush and some diluted TSP and allow to dry completely.
Porch Painting:
Paint your chosen base color with a quality paint designed specifically for concrete and porches. Most major paint companies have a special line of paint JUST FOR THIS. See a few porch paint options below and be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Be sure to let the base paint dry thoroughly before stenciling.
Behr Porch and Patio Floor Paint
Valspar Porch, Floor, and Patio Paint
Benjamin Moore Floor and Patio Paint
Stencil Painting:
Ideally you will stencil your porch pattern with the same type of paint that you used for base as this will provide the most durability. You can have the paint tinted to the color of your choice from their color deck.
You can stencil with stencil brushes or stencil rollers. Most of our customers report that stenciling with brushes gives you a lot more control and cleaner stencil lines-and we agree!
Sealing and Protecting Your Stenciled Porch:
Most of paints designed for porch and patio painting don’t require a sealer for protection. But if you want to give your newly painted and stenciled porch more protection you can seal it with an appropriate topcoat for painted concrete.
We recommend Seal-Create Premium Low Gloss Sealer which waterproofs and seals painted, stained and bare concrete surfaces.
We hope you find this basic porch painting information useful. It’s based on the best practices of our stencil customers. You can find a lot more detailed information by Googling and your own investigation.
We love to receive and share your stencil projects and stories! Every quarter we host a Before/After Stencil Contest where we encourage you to submit your project for a chance to win a $100 Gift Card. So keep those projects and Stencil Stories coming!

Top Five Stencil Contest Winners
Spanish Tile Stencil Set- Joanna Hyatt
“I recently used the Spanish tile set to update our front entryway. With baby #5 set to arrive in a couple of weeks, I really wanted to get this done. It turned out even better than I could have hoped (I normally have Pinterest fails on the regular). The space is now both functional AND beautiful. Everyone who has seen it is so amazed that this was done with stencils and not wallpaper!”
Supernova Tile Allover Stencil -Christina Sargent
“I recently used your stencil in Supernova tile stencil to give our historic craftsman home a porch makeover! I used the Royal Design Studio stencil with Valspar porch and patio paints to create the three-tone design. the porch feels so much larger, cleaner, and more inviting! We are in love with the results. “
Alonzo Tile Stencil-Jessica Walz
“This was my first time using a stencil and I could not be happier with how it turned out. I stayed at a friend's house and I LOVED her fun, vibrant tile and wanted some for my own bathroom, but didn't exactly have the budget for it. Our guest bathroom had a more beige-like tile and it just didn't go with the rest of the cosmetic DIY updates in the bathroom, therefore we used the Rust-Oleum floor paint base and I did varying greys detail with the stencil and a sponge to give it more of a stoney look. This floor really came to life now. Very happy with the results!”
You’re a Star Stencil/ Bird’s Eye Ikat- Shelley Howell
“This is our laundry room- we started by painting and stenciling the wall- painting the trim and also the cabinets. We loved the change. Recently, we decided to paint the outdated tile and stencil it as well- what a difference that has made!!”
Baraka Tile Stencil-Veronica Aleman
“I want an awesome statement in our dining room and I stumbled upon the idea to stencil a design on the upper portion of the wall. I absolutely love it and receive so many compliments!”
Meet our Stencil Contest Runners Up!
Forest Floor Stencil-Megan Frisco
“I had the idea of wallpapering my big blank wall in my dining room and after seeing how expensive it would be I decided to look into stenciling. Searched for weeks for the perfect one, when I came across your forest floor design. It was the perfect amount of whimsical and elegant. I’m so happy with the results. Here are my before and after photos.”
Foliate Damask Wall Stencil/Grand Mughal Border-Dana Simpson
“We purchased a little building for our art gallery in Onancock, Virginia. The floor was scuffed black and white VCT tiles. I sanded, primed and then laid out a rug pattern to get rid of the grid posed by both the floor and ceiling tiles. I used your Damask wall stencil in the blue area- the Grand Mughal Border around the rug edge and the "you're a star" scattered in the interior green rug area. Your brushes worked great. Everyone loves the floor so thank you for your very helpful products!”
Small Endless Vine Stencil-Anne Coleman
“I bought 2 old entertainment center halves to use as a wardrobe on either side of an old pine cabinet that I already had. I painted the wardrobes white--that is the Before picture that I am attaching to this email. I painted the doors and drawer fronts Sea Salt green and then stenciled them with the Endless Vine Wall Stencil in the small size. I just love to repurpose discarded furniture and your stencils are a way to give new life to old furniture pieces!”
Donatella Damask Craft Stencil- Anissa Umfleet
“I purchased this piece because it had great bones. I have a soft spot for these old dressers. There was damaged veneer on the top and the drawers. After scraping and sanding it was ready for the transformation. I used a raised stencil technique in dark gray. Then sanded it back. A white wash was then applied over the stenciled areas to tone it down a bit. The top and front legs were stained in walnut and the entire piece was top coated with a flat finish. I believe this transformation will allow this dresser to be loved for another 100 years. “
Villa Damask Stencil-Divine Designs by Tracey
“I created a sparkle texture with your stencil placed over top in a white faded finish and added chrystal nailheads for a finishing touch.”
Amelie Art Deco Stencil-Noreen Feterl
"Here is my before and after bathroom project. This powder bath is visible for all guests. While I love the look of wallpaper, I also want to retain the integrity of the walls. I used the Amelie Floral Deco Wall Stencil and about 5 different paint colors. I love how well it turned out. I hope you agree that it looks like an expensive wall paper. Thank you for making such a beautiful design."
Arabesque Border-Isabella Pribadi
"The new addition of my balcony looks so blah. I have been searching around how to decorate to look nicer. I saw the “Arabesque Border “ at Royal Design Stencil and decided to give it a try. First time I do the stencil it’s simple, quick and turned out really nice!"
Shibori Japanese Furniture Stencil- Laura Gordon
“This was my first experience using a stencil and I am delighted with how it transformed this mid-century cedar chest.”

You can see how much just this small amount of floral stenciling adds to space-creating a focal point and softening all the horizontal and vertical lines of the tile.

How to Stencil a Wallpaper Look for Less]]>Want to WIN your own stencil gift card? Enter our next Before & After Stencil Contest here.
“This project was so much fun.
This is our new office in the beach cities. We are showcasing our kitchen remodel, and as a designer I wanted to do something fun with the concrete floor. I'm really happy how the Upscaled Moorish Circles Stencil came out!” - Renee Silk
“I’m slowly transitioning my design style from all things modern farmhouse to more of a mid-century/Scandinavian style. I usually stick to neutrals but wanted to bring some color into the house in a fun way. So I decided to do a feature wall in the dining room. The Floral Fireworks Wall Stencil pattern really just spoke to me!” – Taylor Chang
“We just moved to beautiful Florida. This was my first floor project in our lanai and I used the Island Dreams Tile Stencil. I sealed the concrete with Valspar Porch Floor Patio Wood and Concrete Sealer in a satin finish. I used three colors of Sherwin Williams Paint and sealed it all with Rust-Oleum Concrete and Garage Topcoat. We love it.” – Diane Waldrop
“My 33 year old powder room needed a face lift! I used the Lisabetta Damask Wall Stencil and Smoked Oyster Stencil and Pearl Royal Stencil Cremes.” - Donna Webb
“I am a mom who completes DIY projects during nap time! I am chipping away on a big dining room makeover and using Royal Design Studio’s Thicket Leaves Stencil as a top wallpaper look. The paint and stencil made a HUGE difference already and I am so excited to bring the project to its final stages. I am so thankful I found Royal Design Studio because I can honestly not afford to wallpaper our very large dining room and I got an upscale look for so much less!” – Gina Sciannameo
“I just completed a project using the Augusta Tile Stencil. I thought this shelving could use some pizzaz since they are front and center in my home. I was going for an imported tile look. Thought it turned out very well.” – Kathy Montgomery
“The process of doing this very intricate Tribal Batik Wall Stencil was much easier than I thought by following Royal Design Studio’s instructional videos… and it came out gorgeous!” - Jacque Bonelli Smith
“I upcycle furniture and donate my profit to an organization (The Lupus Research Alliance) that funds Lupus research. This is a Hitchcock brand table gifted to me by a friend for this purpose. One look at that stencil and this table and I knew they were meant to go together! I’m so pleased how it turned out! I used a high quality shellac-based primer followed by a latex-acrylic paint. I used foam stencil pouncers and acrylic paints for the stenciling. A water-based acrylic sealer was the final product for the topcoat. Royal Design Studio Stencils are the best out there! The stencils are strong and sturdy. There is no leakage underneath the stencil and so easy to line up on larger projects! Their catalog is huge and I always find what I need. I highly recommend Royal Design Studio. - Rose Marie Cocchiarella
“This is my very first stenciling project. I was inspired by a trip to Morocco. The brass lanterns and photo are from Marrakech, and the Bird’s Eye Ikat Stencil is from Royal Design Studio. Next, I hope to re-finish and stencil the cement floors in my bedroom.” - Tricia Krippel
“We are converting our 1924 house back to some original features. We hated the brick pavers that were put over the original front entrance stairs. After many hours of loving labor-- we finally have the beautiful look we wanted with the help of the Bixby Tile Stencil.” - Elaine Maki
“I recently used a beautiful Royal Design Studio border stencil for a project for a customer's stairs. They turned out beautifully!” - Mychelle Fitzgerald
“I started my project with Clay Beige from Sherman Williams. I selected a gold stencil cream to create a dramatic background. I used Royal Design Studio’s large stencil brush to apply Royal Stencil Cream and the Chez Sheik Wall Stencil pattern to the focal wall.” – Ikla Morris
“The grey concrete pad of my entryway was so boring! After staining it a brick color, I decided it needed more pizazz, and that it would look great with a tile stencil. I chose the Duomo Tile Stencil because of the European feel it would give my entryway. It required 2 layers: one is a soft coral and the other is a soft white. I found the work easy and the end result is very rewarding. Doing this project myself saved me lots of money that it would cost to have brick or tile laid in the space. I was happy to provide my own labor and as a result, enjoy the pride I feel whenever I leave or enter my home!” – Lisa Jones
“This Flourish Allover Wall Stencil is stunning. I am so pleased with how the design in my head translated to the walls. Everyone thinks it's high-end wallpaper. I stenciled first with Renovation Hardware paint in Latte, then offset the stencil 1/4" and stenciled over with Pearl Oyster Royal Stencil Creme. The before-and-after is amazing. Goodbye 1980s peach tile!” – Gina Redwine
“I’m so excited to share my finished project using the Laleh Damask Wall Stencil, as well as stencil brushes & metallic crème paints. We painted our accent wall with Sherwin Williams Deep Sea Dive, then stenciled using a combination of Copper Kettle and Aged Bronze crème paints. The final result is stunning - it looks like high end wallpaper. We are so impressed with how cleanly the stencil design came out - all of Royal Design Studio products were easy to use and the final product is something we are so proud of. Thank you for making it possible to create such a beautiful room!” - Abby Chandanais
“My husband passed away in June. I decided it was time to make our very boring, gray everything bedroom, into a space that is soft and restful using the Lisabetta Damask Stencil. I'm no expert, but this was a great project. I did leave the corners and ceiling undone, but my plan is to frame it in a rustic wood.” - Tracy Prickett
“I had an empty room that was initially intended to use for yoga/meditating, so I wanted to do use the Paradise Lotus Wall Stencil pattern to make the room less plain. Well, some things changed and my empty room needed to become the guest room, so I decided to do one big accent wall with the lotus stencil and I get so many compliments from my guests that come to visit! It looks like high end wallpaper! My favorite room of the house so far!” – Robert Schall
“We are full-time RVers and we are trying to make our RV look more like a tiny home than an RV. We painted the bedroom walls white and applied the Mali Mudcloth Stencil. We love how it turned out and look forward to using more Royal Design Studio Stencils to transfer our RV into a tiny home.” - Lory Strickland
Mandala Fusion Stencil Project by Loretta Huggett
“I painted my front patio using the Mandala Fusion Tile Stencil. I prepped the cement using cement/porch primer from Lowes. then painted the base coat with porch paint tinted to Sherwin Williams Sea Salt. I then Stenciled using various colors of regular paint. I also used throughout the stencil some Royal Stencil Creme in Metallic Teal.” – Shirley Taylor
“We stenciled our back porch in Florida and it made all the difference in the world. It used to be drab and lifeless and now the Mandala Fusion Stencil brings out the warmth and character. We REALLY enjoy the space now!” - Tony Klinakis

“I’m excited to share my first attempt at stenciling! It wasn’t complicated and I am super happy how it turned out. I learned some things, so my next project will hopefully be easier in some ways.” – Kat Berry
Meadowland Floral Wall Stencil project by Erin Brant.
“My daughter was turning 6 and she has always wanted a mermaid scale wall. Love the large scale stencil that we got from Royal Design Studio. Petra Tile Stencil project by Julie Collins
Rattle and Roll Stencil project by Rumana Rahman
“I saw a design project featured in Better Homes and Gardens magazine and redid an old plain and stained patio. The Rosa Tile Stencil came out so amazing. I can’t stop hanging outside there. My husband did a great job.” - Kim Gsell
“I used the Starlight Allover Stencil in the two vanity rooms and one wall of the water closet/shower room. To keep the pattern simple, I simply placed the designs in a random pattern on the walls, rather than stenciling the allover pattern. Wall color is Sherwin Williams Stardew. The lighting in my photos is not ideal, but the rooms look amazing in real life.” - Barb Swartz
Starz Tile Stencil project by Stephanie Long

Our front porch which needed to be resurfaced so we decided to make it pop. A yellow dot in the center really brings out the yellow in the front door.” – Karen Nemphos
“We removed some old worn out Saltillo tiles and created our faux tiles with the Upscaled Hexagon Tile Stencil. I applied a white base coat then used the stencil with textured Behr outdoor concrete paint to make the “tiles”. It takes a while but everyone thinks it looks amazing.” – Micah Tresler
“When I am in my family room and look out all I see is our shed. We had a tornado a year ago that took out the trees around it. It was a weekend project that spanned a month but worth it. Thanks for the beautiful Wisteria Stencil design, Royal Design Studio!” – Deborah Daniels
“I painted our outdated brick house white and the You’re A Star Stencil went perfectly with our new updated house! I was nervous but turned out great. I used Benjamin Moore floor and patio paint.” – Sheri Viox

Are you “wowed” and ready to stencil a gorgeous metallic wall in your home?
This issue featured a gorgeous way to update your home to the latest (but forever timeless!) decorating trend of a clay orange and cobalt blue color palette. Wall Stencils from Royal Stencils are the perfect way to coordinate and tie in different color combos in a room makeover. Better Homes & Gardens loved using our Sound Waves Wall Stencil to give this Southwest aesthetic a modern twist. You can also use Tile Stencils, Modern Stencils, Farmhouse Stencils and more to change up the style for different interiors. Check out what BHG had to say about this great stencil idea...
"Talk about a nature wonder: This trending orange paint color takes its inspiration from the unforgettable landscapes of the Southwest. A subtle spin on terracotta, it skews more sunbaked clay than cayenne pepper for a near neutral ideal on walls. Accents veering electric blue create a palette that's as enchanting as a desert mesa under a cloudless sky."
"For the look of wallpaper but with total control over the colors, we painted the wall Canyon Ridge then painted ripples in Sun Bleached (both are Better Homes & Gardens at Walmart) using the Sound Waves Modern Wall Stencil from Royal Design Studio."
"Orange and blue are opposites on the color wheel, which makes them a can't miss combination for BHG style director Jessica Thomas. To give the combo a fresh spin, she paired this soft terracotta with bright blue accessories. "Cobalt has vibrancy that makes this classic pairing feel modern," she says. If you love the colors but your home skews farmhouse, tweak the tone of the blue. "Rustic rooms may call for darker denim blue accents," Thomas says. "For traditional decor, make it navy.""
"These clay and cobalt pieces bring in the beauty of the desert at dusk (are are proof that opposites really do attract).

Get your sandpaper, paint and stencils ready-because you’re going to be inspired to dive into a furniture flipping project of your own after you see these stenciled furniture makeovers…
Carina Reimers of the @thehousewarmings on Instagram knows a thing or two about successful furniture flipping. She has made a successful business for herself taking cast-off furniture pieces and transforming them into desirable, one-of-a-kind pieces of functional art.
For this dramatic dresser update she took a basic vintage white piece of furniture and turned it into a tribal-inspired black and white stunner with the help of our Hexagon Border Stencil repeated to create an allover pattern to accent the drawer fronts.
A typically tired looking old hutch was given a new life as a chic, shallow cabinet by simply utilizing the top portion. Our Talavera Tile Sets Stencil looks fabulous in shades of blue and gray that show off the pretty blue glassware displayed in front of it. We simply love this classic stenciled furniture flipping transformation via Orphanswithmakeup.com.
Lisa of recreateddesigns.com gave a boring brown bureau a top drawer transformation with a fresh coat of paint and the Timberland Bonnie Christine Furniture stencil. A creative and custom approach to stenciling is sure-fire way to take your furniture flipping to a new level.
Our all-time most popular furniture flipping project, via the talents of thepaintedhive.net. This amazing furniture rehab goes waaaaay back to 2016, when Kristine created it for a charity auction.
This before/after furniture upcycle has really stood the test of time! The Tribal Batik Furniture Stencil is still one of our most popular stencil patterns-proof that good design never goes out of style!
Another timeless classic furniture makeover that you may have seen on Pinterest as this is one popular pin!. This one by Julia Macdowell of Dandelions and Poppies, who took a gentleman’s highboy dresser from sad to stunning with the help of the lovely Lisabetta stencil. An allover damask stencil pattern, Julia simply stenciled one repeat of the design to create a dramatic gold focal point. She created a lovely contrasting accent by stenciling our tiny Lacy Leaves Furniture Stencil on the top drawer.

“I used the Aragon Damask Tile Stencil to create a “rug” for my front porch! I painted my front door a bright coral as part of a whole front entry makeover. The door was beautiful but the entry still lacked a wow factor. We had painted the concrete, but it was so blah. I got the idea for a rug with Royal Design Studio Stencils after seeing a few pinned on Pinterest. I pulled in the door color with the flowers, the green to pull in my plantings and an off white. I then used the Royal Stencil Creme in Copper to makeover my planters and coordinate with my new copper rain chain. This was my first stencil project ever. Thanks for all the videos on your website!” - Lois Mahlberg
“I recently did this project for our daughter’s nursery. My wife and I foster to adopt infants with special needs, and our lil babe we hope to adopt soon LOVES stained glass… so I wanted to create a space that had that effect. I just love this and so does our baby! I used the French Floral Damask Stencil and did a lot of blending and layering with the Royal Stencil Creams… which I’m obsessed with! I then went in and did a lot of detail work by hand. Thank you for creating such amazing products… I can’t wait to do more!” – Jules Bishop-Meinking
“I love to take advantage of my summers by sprucing up my home. This summer I tackled an outdoor brick wall that had been raised and was two different tones. This of course was a challenge during the summer heat in Arizona but the sweat equity paid off. Thank you for your Instagram page and inspiration and Baraka Tile Stencil, Royal Design Studio.” - Laura Perrella
“Redid my bathroom. It went from my least favorite room to my very favorite. The floors with the Marisol Tile Stencil were the cherry on top!” - Patricia Braman
“I struggled for nearly two years on what to do with a drap slab I called a patio. I love travelling the world and I'm often inspired by all variations of design. In 2020, when everything stopped, so did my travel. Looking through images from past trips, I was compelled to bring those experiences to my backyard through design. This look would not have been achieved without the Tribal Batik Stencil. I loved the way it really brought a new place to my outdoor space. Material: Stencil, black concrete paint, white concrete paint, concrete sealer.” - Thelma Van
“I just finished a beautiful stenciling project for a lovely new client. We wanted to connect the stunning wallpaper on the dining room walls to the adjacent butlers pantry. One idea for the ceiling was plain gold & white and then she asked me to try another idea using the Duomo Tile Stencil she found herself at Royal Design Studio. I selected colors from the wallpaper for the stencil and then glazed the entire ceiling with a soft metallic to make the final design more ethereal. She was thrilled with the outcome!” – Linda Roby
“As you can see, we just had a dirty, bumpy rectangular concrete area. We got a gazebo and my husband screwed it in. We were hoping to get a nice rug to cover the concrete. We could not find one that we liked in our price range and I have seen videos of people painting concrete so I thought I would try it too. I pressure washed the area and used a beige concrete stain on it. We used four coats of the stain and kept some in a small jar for touch-ups (this became very handy later on). I measured the placement and then started on the first Lisboa Tile Stencil. I used four colors I liked that had the 70s/bohemian feel. I was accompanied in my painting by my free-range chickens and dog. This is where the small jar for touch-ups came in handy besides my own personal mistakes. Right now we just have a few chairs to sit in to watch the children play in the backyard.” – Lucy Nguyen
“I am going for a Dr. Suess theme in my kids’ bedroom. Everything out there to buy on the internet related to the cat in the hat is all in boy colors and I only have 2 girls. So I decided to create my own design in girly colors. I needed a funky stencil for the accent walls. I painted the Chevron Stencil with pink and red border. It came out great!” – Mikaela Rojas
“I am a mural artist. Lately, clients have been very interested in using stencil designs to create dramatic impact in their homes. Here is a recent project where a 'ho-hum' niche area became a 'Wow!' space!! I used a warm taupe base color and the Royal Smoked Oyster Creme stencil paint with the Classic Damask Stencil. Wrapping the corners in a small space with such an ornate stencil was a little tricky, but patience and perseverance paid off!” – Kathleen Ivanov
“When we bought our home in 2013, we quickly learned just how much the former owner loved everything cow, black and white. A decade later, we still were unable to replace the black kitchen flooring so I painted it with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint and used the Concrete Quilt Tile Stencil. We have gotten so many compliments and are so happy with our decision. Stenciling was a fabulous idea!” – Deb Von Cannon
“I wanted my entry/courtyard that looked more like part of our garage to look & feel like an extension of our home. I wanted the area to be both an attractive and useful additional gathering & dining space. I loved your stencil choices & the Darby Tile Stencil was so easy to use. Thanks for such a great product.” – Sherry Jackson
“Laundry room update completed today! Grew tired of the bland monochrome color in here, and these colors with the Starz Tile Stencil go well with the red accents in the adjoining kitchen. Gives it just enough life and brightens it up.” - Geralyn Pettit
“Here is my before and after project with the Lisboa Tile Stencil! t! I love it and hope you do too!” – Susan Scroggs
“I painted the wall Benjamin Moore Onyx in a flat finish and stenciled Benjamin Moore Simply White in their Regal Matte finish. I also utilized the canvas seen in the before picture to transform my dining room. I originally painted the canvas for one of our former homes. Although I liked the composition of the art work, it would not work with the Loose Weave Stenciled wall. I simply primed the canvas white and the gave it a couple of coats of the Simply White paint I used on the wall and stenciled the Onyx black on the the canvas. I liked the appearance of my dining room before the transformation but now I love the appearance of my dining room.” – Vicki Rickard
“I stenciled an accent wall in one of our bedrooms. The walls already have Benjamin Moore Tudor Brown on them. I used the Majorelle Floral Trellis Wall Stencil (two layer design) and NINE! paint colors to produce this vibrant result. This was my first time stenciling, so I learned as I worked. I’m really excited to do another project in the Spring.” – Rebecca Mazumdar
“I am a guy who loves shoes. When I first purchased my home, I said I was going to convert one room for my shoes or a walk-closet. I never did it, because I felt it was selfish for visitors...12 yrs later....and very infrequent visits from friends and family, prompted me to do just what I've always wanted. I converted my unused gym/office into a shoe room using the Mali Mudcloth Stencil.
My powder room was minimally decorated after purchasing my house. One day I felt energized, as the sun started to set later and spring was upon us...and I grabbed my paint supplies and put in some work! My entire house is African decor. I am in love with black paint, because everyone cringes when I say I'm going to paint black. So I used it tastefully to accent the wall behind the toilet, added the Mali Mucloth Stencil detail and swapped out the fixtures to add cohesion.” – Craig Brian
“When we purchased this house, the downstairs was painted in Tuscan colors, which was all the rage when the house was built in the early 2000’s. My style, however, is an eclectic mix of vibrant, bright colors with transitional and mid-century touches. I began 2022 painting the dining room a bright kelly green to coordinate with a family heirloom, which left me using the color wheel to find a bright complimentary color that would pop next to it. Red was too “Christmas-y,” so I went with a gorgeous fuchsia instead for my kitchen, entry way and downstairs bathroom. I felt that the bathroom needed kelly green incorporated to bring the two colors together in an intentional way. Royal Design Studio Petal Play Stencil to the rescue! I’m very pleased with the result.” – Kathy Ehrlich-Scheffer
“I recently stenciled my old tile bathroom floor with the Petra Tile Stencil. I enjoyed working on this project and received a lot of compliments on my floor. No one can believe the floor was stenciled! They challenge me to tell them the truth! It looks great and I would recommend Royal Design Studio Stencils to my friends and family!” – Jody Panek
“Here is my basement bathroom flooring before I stenciled it with the Renaissance Tile Stencils. I absolutely love Royal Design Studio Stencils and it turned out far better than I could’ve ever imagined.” – Kelly Abercrombie
“I used drop cloths to make curtains for our screened-in patio, but they were so plain. I loved that they are each a single panel, 144" wide x 108" long, but they looked very blah. I used the Royal Design Studio Stencil "Ribbon Lattice" to add interest. Originally, I was going to use the stencil over the entire panel, but I fell in love with it after two rows. I added a thick stripe of black cotton fabric at the bottom of each panel and I couldn't be happier with this project.” – Joan Robbins
“I came across Royal Design Studio Stencils and found the Ribbon Lattice Stencil that would be perfect for what my client was wanting with blue & gold feature wall in her bonus room. I repainted the walls in Symphony Blue and used a metallic gold paint for the pattern on one wall. She was absolutely thrilled with the results and it turned out better than she imaged! So much so, that she has me come back and do the other wall across from it in the same way! It turned out amazing and I’ve done several other stencil jobs for clients since! Royal Design Studio stencils have been so great to work with! I am in love with using stencils and how it looks so much like wallpaper when done!” – Stephanie Wilding
Katherine Dunavant painted her kitchen backsplash with the Subway Tile Stencil.
“We are rounding out a complete backyard renovation. We had all of this beautiful space but then this ugly and boring concrete pad so what better way to bring it to life than with stenciling! I read all of Royal Design Studio’s tips and tricks, watched a bunch of videos, and got to work. We absolutely LOVE how it turned out and the Supernova Tile Stencil makes the space truly unique.” – Chrystal Meerendonk
“I am so happy with the new look in my patio! The patio had this ugly green paint on it. Half painted half concrete. My husband and I worked together and turned it around! First coat: Kilz primer for exterior brick and concrete; Second Coat: concrete and patio paint; Third: Supernova Tile Stencil with concrete and patio paint using brushes; Fourth : we used and acrylic floor sealant; It should last for years to come. I just discovered Royal Design Studio before doing this project and I can’t wait for doing some more projects!” – Rebeca Mullen
“I recently moved and the lower patio was so ugly, I wanted to do something to improve the look with the Tessellated Tile Stencil. I found Jen Woodhouse’s concrete stencil rug that used Royal Design Studio Stencils -THANK YOU JEN!!! After I stained the concrete white, it was such an improvement, that I was going to risk trying the stencil because if it looked really bad I could just repaint white. Upon doing my first stencil, which looked less than desirable, I said, “Well, I will title this project - ‘Progress not perfection’”. I am so glad I kept going as I love my new concrete rug!!! I finished my first ever stencil project! Who says we have to stop trying new things at age 50?!? Not me! I am so excited to start my next stencil project!!” – Christy Cox
“I just finished stenciling my porch wall with the Toledo Tile Stencil and I'm thrilled with the amazing effect!! My walls are crooked so no amount of leveling helped. I think the imperfections are what makes this project unique. I'm so in love with the finished look and can't stop admiring it. I'm ready to tackle more rooms in the house. Thank you for the beautiful stencils, Royal Design Studio.” - Linda Groenhoff
“I had an old dresser that needed a little love. So I painted it with Chalk Paint but it looked dull, then found the perfect Tribal Stencil at Royal Design Studio. Here is the finished project.” – Cindy Warrick

“Just wanted to say thank you Royal Design Studio! The You’re A Star Stencil helped me transform a piece of my living room that was hardly livable into what is now my favorite place to be. It had only subfloor underneath so I decided to paint and stencil it with porch and floor paint. I finished it before Christmas last year & combined with my twinkly silver Christmas tree, it was a great way to end the year.” – Kara
“All I really wanted was a bit of pegboard in my craft room. But my husband wanted to completely re-do the entire room. He put doors on the ceiling. I cleaned and painted everything. I cleaned the concrete floor and etched it with a diluted acid treatment. Then I painted it white with a good concrete paint. Next up was the stenciling on a concrete floor with the You’re A Star Tile Stencil for a brand new look. The paint on the floor is the same paint that's on the trim and the doors on the closets. I finished up with a clear sealer coat which dried an amber color which instantly gave it an aged look. Voila! “ – Becca Lotane

Get good stencil paint!
Use the best quality paint you can find. For both furniture and walls, we love to use a top-quality wall paint with a built-in primer from Home Depot or Benjamin Moore because it will give you a lot of coverage in one coat and dry quickly. As an alternative, use a heavy bodied, chalk-type paint that also dries fast and builds up color and layers quickly.
Use a DRY stencil brush or roller
This is our mantra for every stencil project, but it’s especially important when you are using the most contrasting colors there are. Any excess paint seepage will stand out, so take the time to make sure you offload your stencil brush or roller really well so you don’t have to do a lot of annoying paint touchups at the end.
Practice patience when stenciling
Patience is always a virtue, but stenciling white over black or black over white WILL generally require at least 2 stencil paint layers, unless you want a more distressed look.
If you are using a quick drying paint and a dry brush, the first layer will usually be dry enough to start again back at the beginning almost immediately. Otherwise you can have a fan on your project area or speed it up with a blast from a hair dryer.
Pro Tip: if you go back for the second coat before the first one is dry enough you will “lift” the first layer. Leave it alone, let it dry, and come back to it.

There is an original bare concrete slab (about 20 yrs old) which is still in good shape. We painted the pergola white and my husband built the new fence whilst I started stenciling the floor. I power washed the concrete and once it dried completely I painted it with a quick dry, blue garage floor paint as base. I applied the Endless Circles Stencil in an off white using the same garage floor paint. I then sealed it with about 3 coats of sealant to make sure it stays in good condition. The stencil was so easy use! It was easier than I expected to complete the pattern around corners and the supporting pillars and so much cheaper than replacing it with decking. We now just love our new space. I went from being embarrassed about the area and thinking of it as an eye sore to being proud of the transformation and enjoying spending time here. It looks light, fresh and welcoming, even at night. Love Royal Design Studio’s quality products and customer services!” - Pearl van Staden
