3 Easy Stencil Techniques Featuring Our Indian Stencils Collection

Whenever we come out with new stencil patterns, as we recently did when we added some beautiful new stencils to our Indian Stencils Collection, we always have fun putting them to the test with some simple stencil finishes to inspire you. Read on to see 3 easy (and one unusual) ways to use these pretty new designs!

The Annapakshi Indian Damask Stencil is an original stencil pattern based on India's mythological white bird that is believed to live in heaven. It represents purity, prosperity and beauty. We love it so much that we have it available in three sizes. The mystical Annapakshi resembles a peacock, so we decided to interpret the medium-sized version of this new stencil design in regal peacock blues!

As we carry the full line of Chalk Paint® decorative paint, we often use it in our studio projects. For the background color shown here, we mixed equal parts of Florence Chalk Paint and Provence Chalk Paint and rolled on two coats with a foam roller.

The stenciling itself was quickly done with Napoleonic Blue Chalk Paint using our new 3" Super Large Stencil Brush. This stencil brush works amazingly well with both Chalk Paint® AND our Royal Stencil Creme paints. The brush allows you to stencil an allover pattern just a quickly as using a foam stencil roller, but with the advantage of more precision and less chance of stencil "bleed-under".

To stencil a feature wall like this, first measure and mark the center of the wall so that you can begin by centering and stenciling a full repeat of the pattern there. The Annapakshi Damask Stencil is a "half drop" pattern, meaning that the repeat of the pattern drops down halfway from one vertical repeat of the pattern to the next. In order to repeat this pattern correctly, you need to skip back and forth from one vertical row to the next. The registration "windows" in the stencil make it easy to get perfect alignment, and you can double check with a small level periodically to make sure that you keep your pattern repeating correctly.

Our new Rani Indian Paisley Damask Stencil pulls it's iconic motif from a vintage sari pattern. For this pattern we wanted to interpret the intricate and delicate look of henna (known as mehndi in India). Henna patterns are traditionally drawn on a woman's hands or feet using a temporary plant-based dye.

The steps for using a stencil for this technique couldn't be more simple or straightforward; simply trace the pattern with a brown Sharpie!

We CAN pass on some words of wisdom for this stencil tracing process though...

Tracing a detailed pattern like this can be very time consuming, so we recommend limiting this stencil technique to a smaller wall space. You could also stencil with a Sharpie, or other type of permanent ink pen, on fabric or even furniture for a very cool, unique look. In fact, we recently shared a fun Henna Inspired Tee Shirt project on our Paint + Pattern design blog here that uses specialty fabric markers called Tee Juice Pens.

To showcase our Large Annapakshi Indian Damask Stencil we turned to one of our favorite stencil techniques, the Drop Shadow effect. Rather than stencil the Annapakshi Damask here as an allover pattern, we used this large-scale design as a single focal point motif on a bright pink wall.

This is an easy stencil technique that just LOOKS complicated. To achieve it, you simply stencil the design first using Flat Black Royal Stencil Creme. Then, shift the stencil up and to the right diagonally about 1/8". Stencil it again with a 1:1 mix of Antique Gold Stencil Creme and Bright Gold Stencil Creme. The result is a cool dimensional look where a black "shadow" drops under the pattern and gives it a large dose of POP!

Please feel free to browse the entire Indian Stencils Collection for more ideas and ways to use these designs on walls and furniture. Remember that we always welcome YOU to share your Royal Design Studio stencil projects with us (and the world!). You can email pictures to projects@royaldesignstudio.com, or better yet, post them on our Royal Design Studio Facebook Page!

Polka Party from Project Nursery

Kids rooms are always so much fun to decorate with stencils, especially if you are itching to experiment with bold colors that your growing kids would just love! Haneen, a stay at home mom of 3 girls and one baby boy did exactly that to decorate a transitional bedroom of her baby girl gone tween. She has an art degree, so while not working, she tends to pour all her creative energy into decorating her beautiful home for her family.

Using a dreamy color palette, Haneen created a bold and fun room that any tween girl would die for! Haneen’s daughter picked her current color “loves” of sea-green and bright pink for her mother to create with. We think it’s a great color combination for a tween girl’s room, as it seems to reflect both her childlike and preadolescent stage at the same time. Haneen added a touch of whimsy to the wall by stenciling a polka dot pattern in light green using Royal Design Studio’s Medium Polka Party Allover Stencil. The feature wall turned out quite stunning, don’t you think?

For furniture, she used the dresser that belonged to her husband as a child, and the desk that belonged to Haneen herself when she was a kid. She further accentuated the room by gathering knick knacks from Hobby Lobby, Etsy, Ebay, Pottery Barn, Ikea, Home Goods and Target, to create an ideal dream room for her little girl.

Haneen scouted a beautiful quote for the bathroom wall from etsy. It reads:

"If you have good thoughts they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely”

– Roald Dahl

Haneen’s big girl room was chosen as the reader’s favorite on Project Nursery and we are proud to be a part of this fabulous project through our beautiful Polka Party Stencil. This stencil is as versatile as it can get and can be used to decorate for kids and adults alike. Don’t believe us?

New India Inspired Stencils Have us in the Mood to Decorate

We have been featuring the majestic designs, motifs and colors of India all month long on our Paint + Pattern digital design magazine. Inspired by the art and culture of this magical country, we have been working on adding some beautiful new patterns to our India Stencils Collection.

Classic Indian motifs such as paisleys, delicate floral, elegant trelliswork, and intricate geometric borders have been reinterpreted into new stencil patterns of all shapes and sizes. These are patterns that can blend beautifully into many different decorating schemes and color palettes.

To prove that point, we poured our creative juices into creating some elegant mood boards that feature some of our favorite new stencil patterns. We hope you enjoy them!

The Annapakshi Damask Stencil

Annapakshi is a beautiful Indian mythological bird that is popularly also known as Annam in South of India. Typically, a brass lamp is lit before any important event or venture and an Annapakshi motif is an integral part of the design of these lamps owing to its symbolism for divinity, purity, and beauty.

This wonderful concept immediately struck a chord with us when looking for inspiration for this stencil collection. The result was this stunning stencil design, the Annapakshi Damask Stencil, which is available in three sizes and can be used as a singular stenciled motif or repeated to create an allover pattern.

We tried to explore the look of this stencil in soft shades of blue and green, and matched it with some cool artifacts from your beloved online stores. The outcome - fabulous!

If your style is the exotic global kind, you can get the above look by accessorizing with: Oversized Punched Metal Pendant Lamp from World Market, Flourish Velvet Medallion Pillow from Pier 1, Everett Upholstered, Ikat Chevron Regal Blue Sofa – Prints from West Elm

Jaipur Flower Garden and Kamal Lotus Flower

India is known for the intricate trellis work of its forts and palaces, especially the ones made during the Mughal Empire. Women in those times were not allowed to show their faces to strange men. The intricate trellis work in small windows of forts and palaces enabled them to look outside and keep up with everyday happenings. Our Raj Trellis Indian Wall Stencil lets you bring this old world charm straight to your home in the form of a delicate allover trellis pattern.

Speaking of the Mughal Empire, the lotus flower, also known as ‘Kamal’ in Hindi, has been an integral part of various Mughal styles, as well as other arts and crafts of India. Our Kamal Lotus Flower Indian Furniture Stencil is a tribute to this beautiful creation that is recognized as "Incredible India's" national flower.

If you love both these stencils equally, don’t worry because we have you covered! The Indian Trellis & Lotus Flower Stencil Set combines these two gorgeous patterns that will let you create a wonderful conversational wall in your home.

To get this chic look for yourself, find these wonderful accents at World Market: Paisley Arya Quilt, Pink Embroidered Flower Lamp Shade, Spice Avira Flat-Woven Wool Rug

Rani Paisley Stencil

How could we be talking about India this whole time and not think of Paisley – the most significant of all Indian motifs! Rani means royal queen in Hindi and paisley for some reason invokes a feminine connotation to it. The Rani Paisley Stencil from Royal Design Studio was designed to personify the idea of a royal motif. This stencil has been given a regal look through layers of beautiful floral pattern surrounding a lovely paisley motif in the center.

For a sophisticated and elegant look, we combined: Neutral Embroidered Medallion Pillow from Pier 1, Linen Tufted Devon Slipper Chair from World Market, Gold Leaf Glass Lamp from Pier 1

Girl Bedrooms Inspired by Disney's Frozen

Disney’s Frozen is skating its way through the hearts of everyone young and old. Top that off with the recent Oscar wins, and it seems this winter flick is only going to get hotter in 2014! What is the appeal? Of course the music is powerful and the plot is engaging, but it is also simply a stunning visual treat! It has fresh colors and detailed patterns swirling around in every scene. The animators have truly outdone themselves this time.

But, I’m sure in your household, Frozen’s appeal is more focused on the characters themselves. Have you found that all your little girl can talk about is trying to decide – on a daily basis – if she is more like Elsa or Anna? If so, we’ve thought of a fun way for you to bond with her over a weekend project – stencil her bedroom (you know, her most important place in the whole world) to reflect her favorite character!

Unlike hanging wallpaper, stenciling is the easy way to add pattern and color to any room. Plus, it's affordable and simply changed later on. You can actually share the experience with your daughter and spend the weekend taking great satisfaction in knowing that you did it yourself - and you did it together!

Searching through our Stencil Collection with our design team, here are some cool design ideas for stenciling a girl’s room inspired by the movie Frozen!

For the Elsa fans out there, we used our Starry Moroccan Night Stencil. This simple yet delicate, all-over stencil is inspired by the starry night skies of Marrakech. However, with this color scheme derived from Elsa’s beautiful dress, this stencil perfectly resembles beautiful snow-flakes, don’t you think?

For the Anna fans out there, we used our elegant Large Flourish Allover Stencil and again, pulled the colors from her bodice, cape and skirt. This stencil features large open scrollwork, making it suitable for larger rooms and areas, or smaller rooms where you wish to create a bold, graphic statement.

And for the adults out there that can’t get enough of the colors and pattern too, these Frozen-inspired designs can be adapted throughout the home.

To create the vertical stripes that would give a wallpaper effect, we were inspired from Anna’s beautiful bottle green dress. Our beautiful Swedish Floral Wall Stencil Border fit perfectly to create the classic look. This pattern also comes in an allover stencil: Swedish Floral Allover Stencil that can achieve a similar paneled look.

And here to recreate the adorable dining area, we used our Large Entwined Trellis Stencil. This stencil would look equally beautiful when lined along the hallways.
