Hello Mehreen,
Yay it’s your first time stenciling – how fun!! Welcome to the greatest thing since sliced bread ;) There are lots of bright Chalk Paint colors to choose from if you want to go colorful. Chalk Paint has a matte appearance, and acrylic does not, so it depends if you want that overall shiny or matte look to your furniture. We also like adding metallic details to a Chalk Painted piece with our Royal Stencil Cremes to mix it up. You don’t need to use primer when you use Chalk Paint, but if there is already a darker paint that is already on the furniture that may be seen through the new coat, then consider sanding/stripping the original layer. Make sure to check out our Stencil Ideas and How to Stencil at the top of the page for more tutorials!

Hi,

I have a finished (but I think unpolished) table I want to stencil on. Since this is my first time, I’m not interested in an antique look. Instead, I want some bright colours. Should I use chalk paint or acrylic? Do I also need to use any primer, or sand the table before I begin? I’m excited, but want to do this right!

Thank you :)
Mehreen

I’d like to attach a picture, but can’t!

Hi Gina,
The short answer is yes, you can. However, we recommend for any hard, shiny surface to first abrase it with a Scotch Brite Pad and Comet.

Best of luck with your product!
