Stenciled Tamise Border
Tamise Flakes (pronounced tam-ee-say) are small, broken pieces of metal leaf that are ideal for incorporating into smaller areas such as furniture and moldings and in larger spaces along with larger pieces of book or Schaibin leaf. This step-by-step technique shows you how to create a banded border design with a Tamise finish.

 Measure and tape off a border to the desired width.In this case the border width was simply chosen to duplicate the width of the stencil itself.
Apply a thin, even layer of size with a flocked Velour Roller cover which creates a nice, smooth finish to the size.
 Allow the size to come "to tack", approx. 15-20 minutes.
Dust your hands or gloves slightly with baby powder to keep the leaf from sticking to them. Apply the small flakes of Tamise leaf randomly throughout the border area. Even on a vertical surface the leaf will grab on and stick easily.
 Smooth down the Tamise lightly with the flat of your hand. You can now fill in the rest of the background with either book (shown) or Schaibin leaf leaf.
Composition Gold leaf is used here to contrast with the copper base of the Variegated Red Tamise, but Copper leaf could be used as well.
Place the leaf randomly, as opposed to laying in side by side squares, to match the random organic effect of the Tamise.
The gold leaf will only stick where there is remaining exposed size. Be sure to put a protective covering on the floor below to catch the loose leaf that will fall!
 If desired, you can "age" the leaf with Modern Masters Black Patina Solution.
Pour some off into a shallow container and dip in a damp sea sponge and wring out well. Tap the sponge very lightly onto the surface, changing the direction of your hand and pressure to create variety.
You will want to try this technique on a sample first to get a feel for the Patina Solution. Start light and go slow, as the Black Patina solution will affect the leaf quickly and too dramatically if applied to heavily!
 Stencil the border design using Modern Masters Metallic Paint in English Brown.
You will want to aim for even coverage, but do not apply it so heavily that you completely cover up the nice texture of the patinated leaf below.
 Finish and protect the border with a thin coat of Liberon Medium Oak Wax. This will add an additional patina and richness to the look while also sealing and protecting the leaf from further tarnishing.
Alternatively, you could seal the border area with a rolled on coal of oil-based polyurethane or shellac.
