The company's president and creative director, Melanie Royals, is a self-taught artist and entrepreneur who re-discovered and updated decorative arts stenciling beginning in 1984 and founded Royal Design Studio in San Diego, California in 1991. 

Our first catalogue of pre-cut designer stencils was released in 1994. In it, we introduced an entirely new concept, "free-form" stenciling, which is now a much-copied, industry staple. Since that time we have developed many other innovative stenciling looks techniques that have helped to elevate the art of stenciling and broaden opportunities for stencil application on a professional level. 

Our Extraordinary Stenciled Effects program, introduced in 2001,  helped to change the face of decorative finishing by combining stenciling with decorative finishing mediums and textures to create new techniques that produce elegant patterned finishes for a wide variety of surfaces.

 

To this day we continue to strive to produce designs and techniques that will inspire a whole new generation to utilize this unique and easy to master, versatile artform.
