How to Stencil a Hardwood Floor

Stencil a colorful, custom rug on a hardwood floor with the help of Shannon Kaye -a talented decorative painter-turned DIY Network TV host of her own series "Fresh Coat". Shannon recently wrapped up a series of new decorative painting videos for the DIY Network website. We are thrilled that she chose to use our Large Chez Ali Moroccan stencil and can share the how-to stencil video  with you here!

Do you have an old hardwood floor that needs some new life? You can also use this idea to stencil a concrete patio, or even linoleum flooring after priming and painting. Shannon uses latex paints and large stencil brushes to complete this project, which she then tops off with fun accents of copper metal leaf. See more of Shannon Kaye's painting videos on the DIY Network.

Oil-based paint is a pain to clean up, but the upside is that it lasts and wears very well!! The only way to clean up tools, etc, is with Mineral Spirits. Be sure to wear gloves and have good ventilation!! Hope that helps!

This is beautiful, I love it! I’m in the process of doing my hardwood floors as well, and I ended up with oil based paint. (I know, floor paint would have been so much better!) I’m wondering if you have any tips for clean up with the oil based paint.

I love what you have done. I have been wanting to do something similar on my old food floor for couple of years. I am so glad I came across your website. I have a question. Do you prep your wood floor before stenciling it? What type of paint do you use? What should I do to make my design and paint last longer?
