Romance in the Closet: A Stenciled Dressing Room with Fortuny Style!

Creating the look of elegant and lovely linens or textile wallcoverings on any surface is possible with a stenciled fabric finish. The Damask Stencils Collection from Royal Design Studio has a myriad of stencil patterns to choose from for a designer wallpaper look and one of the most popular for this fabric technique is the Fortuny Stencil. The pattern is reminiscent of ones used in the famed Fortuny silks from Italy and its refined, graceful quality.

Michele had decided on a for a subtle, tone-on-tone look for her fabric finish as a compliment to her artful mix of antique French paperie, small watercolors, vintage jewelry and self-created collages. She used a foam roller with a gentle gray for part of an afternoon to create her stenciled feature wall. "I'm so happy with my newly embellished closet wall. It's classically quiet combination of the muted gray on white stenciling evokes a lovely hushed elegance," she says of the beautiful result. "If, like me, you are going for a worn and distressed look, you'll want to roll on the paint unevenly so that some areas of the stencil's pattern receive less color. It's a lightning quick method!" You can read more on her stenciled fabric technique in her stenciled dressing room post.

We asked Michele to share her top stenciling tip with us and she happy obliged! "Buy a roll of kraft paper or shipping paper to practice before taking your roller to the wall. You may find the paint formula needs to be adjusted or that lighter or heavier pressure with the roller is required for your desired effect." One of the happy perks of this tip? "Your practice results in beautiful gift wrap you can actually use!" What a lovely bonus from such a practical recommendation!

Michele frequently uses our stencils for her projects, including this ethereal stenciled mirror and fun stenciled canvas art. "I love using Royal Design Studio designs because there are few home decor investments that will stand the test of time like their stencils. Since they are high quality and laser cut from a thick, durable plastic, they may be used over and over for various projects." Michele also adds that she prefers the large sizes as they are "awesome" time savers. Great advice!
