Global Chic Stenciling: A Tribal Furniture Transformation

Global Chic Stenciling: A Tribal Furniture Transformation

Do you often find yourself rooting for the underdog? So do we at Royal Design Studio, and that’s why we love seeing the JAW-DROPPING stencil transformations that our customers do with neglected décor. It’s fascinating to see how talented DIY’ers take on a worn piece of furniture and give it new life with a little TLC and Furniture Stencils. A great underdog example is the $5 cabinet that Kristine from The Painted Hive bought. She bought it for a charity donation project because she loves the large mid-century shape, but it needed some serious work.

And holy moly… it started off pretty bad but look what she did to get this piece on top and win some serious style points:

Kristine scored with her strategy of staining and stenciling the cabinet. She says, "This basic stencil over stain technique can be used to transform anything with super high-impact results."  Stenciling a gorgeous pattern is the best way to add that WOW factor on a DIY décor project.

Here’s how she did it: She started off by stripping the piece down to its frame and cut new doors and panels. She then painted the body of the cabinet with a gorgeous charcoal colored paint and stained the doors with a teak brown color. She laid out the stained doors on a flat surface and arranged them how they would look if they were attached to the frame. She placed and secured our Tribal Batik Furniture Stencil with painter’s tape onto a door and stenciled the dotted pattern with a foam roller and white paint. Kristine loves that the stencil comes with built-in registration marks so that she could easily reposition the stencil and paint the pattern across the doors.

She says, “I truly hope this refurb encourages a few of you to tackle something you might otherwise have felt a bit intimidated by. Absolutely everything has potential. Of course though, you don’t need to start with a piece that’s already got one foot in the dumpster to create something amaze-balls.” You can just stencil your own worn furniture that needs a revamp or hack an IKEA piece that’s too simple for your amazing style!
