Stenciled Bookcase Ideas

Do you love to create fun DIY projects with Furniture Stenciling? We do! There's no denying that refinishing furniture has experienced a resurgence within the last few years. There's a certain joy to taking a piece that is old, drab or just plain out-of-style and creating a new life for it with stencils, paint and textures. Royal Design Studio Stencils has a myriad of pattern possibilities to add a special creative, custom touch but also offer the Furniture Stencils Collection which are perfectly sized on a smaller scale to make them ideal stencils for furniture painting. Chalk Paint® decorative paint by Annie Sloan has also helped lead the way with a durable, beautiful product that adheres to almost any surface without the need to sand or prime.

Our Stencil Senses have been tingling as we've been noticing more and more of our stenciling friends adding pattern and oomph to the backs of bookcases and other furniture pieces! It's a fun and inspiring technique to help make your furniture SHINE! Let's take a closer look at a few of these stenciled projects.

Stenciling the backs of cabinets and bookcases with Royal Design Studio Stencils

Molly Mansker of Ole & Inga is a stencil dynamo! She came upon a 1960's maple desk and painted the exterior body in Coco Chalk Paint® with a wash of Florence Chalk Paint®. The inside of the drop-front desk and bookcase was left natural and stenciled over with the Fabric Damask Stencil in Old White Chalk Paint®.  The entire project was finished with both clear and dark Annie Sloan Soft Wax. Molly removed the back of the bookshelf and letter compartment of the desk prior to stenciling to achieve clean edges and a pristine look. Perfection!

We love customer shares and this one is NO exception! Rebecca Martinez used the Skylar's Lace Floral Stencil on the back of her bookcase. Isn't it divine? She shares that she loves the pattern so much, she's planning on using it for her daughter's bathroom! What a great bonus: Stencils can be used over and over again, especially if you follow the easy care for stencils and stencil brushes guidelines.

Ideas for Stenciling Cabinets and Cupboards | Royal Design Studio

Contemporary and fun! Amy from Playing Sublimely was inspired by an article in Better Homes & Gardens to stencil and paint a French cupboard she was having a love-hate relationship with. Both Chalk Paint® and the Zebra Stripes Furniture Stencil helped make this relationship a full-on Love-Love one. We hate to brag but Stencil Therapy is the BEST therapy. Mmm-hmmm.

Stenciled Bookcase Makeovers | Royal Design Studio Stencils

Our friend and design guru, Sarah Gunn of Yummy Mummy Club, calls Royal Design Studio the "stencil company that has the prettiest designs I have ever seen". That makes our stenciled hearts happy! She also wields the patterns like a stencil ninja because each of her projects are always beautiful, in style and with gorgeous colors to boot! Here, a stenciled bookcase makeover showcases the Eastern Lattice Moroccan Stencil making a striking and super fun statement in green and white. Stencil Grade? A+.

Using Chevron Stencils for Walls, Insets and Bookshelves | Royal Design Studio

If you have inset niches or shelving instead of a standalone furniture piece, stencils are a perfect solution as well! Chelsy Boucher of B. Couture Photography wanted something subtle but also trendy and fun for her daughters' shared bedroom.  During the redesign of the little girls' space, she decided an important design element was to stencil the back of the shelves in gold with the Modern Chevron Wall Stencil to compliment the beautiful pink and mint color scheme she had planned. Isn't it just so pretty and stylish? Super posh!

Stenciling the back of a bookcase livens up a space with paint and pattern! The effect is not overwhelming and yet it's designed to not fade into the background either. Design Win-Win! We also have a special Stencil Surprise for you -- we found so many inspiring projects with this  beautiful technique that we are sharing MORE in a second post coming up soon! Have a Stencilicious day!

But wait -- there's MORE! :)
