We host a quarterly Before & After Stencil Contest to encourage our talented customers to share their stencil project journeys (and fab outcomes) so we can-in turn-share and inspire others with the magic of stenciling.
We have 36 entries (WOW!) this last quarter and were blown away by the heart and creativity that you pour into your homes. Unfortunately we can’t share them ALL here, but we have organized our stencil contest winners here and selection of very worthy mentions in a PART 2 Post. Garden Trellis Floral Wall Stencil by Jody Rozanas
This is Jody’s third stencil project with Royal Design Studio stencils-and it’s a winner!
Jody says, “I wanted to breathe historic life into this dull master bedroom. The cost of wallpaper did not fit my budget and with the successful results of my previous stencil project I was excited for another stunner makeover to happen in this room. Once again, I was thrilled when the master bedroom stencil project was completed. The finished wall brings a dramatic, elegant aesthetic to the room.”
Jody used our Royal Stencil Creme paints on a black background for this stunning look.
Large Endless Vine Wall Stencil by Bonnie Payne
Bonnie loves the warmth and coziness of patterned walls-and finds stencils are much more budget friendly than wallpaper (Agreed!)
She decided to stencil all 4 walls of her spare bedroom. She says, “It was a lot of work, but soooo worth it! Peeling back the stencil for the first time was magical! I will be stenciling my other spare bedroom next. Would I recommend it to a friend? 1,000%!!!”
Her stenciling tips: First of all, I would strongly urge people to READ EVERYTHING that comes in the packaging with your stencil(s). I was so excited to get started that I tossed the packaging aside not realizing there was important information included. Once I began cleaning up, I found instructions in the cellophane packaging that would have been very helpful had I read them before I got started, such as how to clean your stencils as you go to ensure crisp, clean lines. Also, there are videos on their website. Take advantage of these great resources!
Secondly, it may take a few tries with different tools to find the one that works best for your wall(s). I began using a 3" foam roller, but found that with the texture of my walls, a stipple paint brush worked best. It did a great job getting into the crevices. NOTE: It doesn't take near as much paint as you would think. An almost dry brush works best. And it's okay to practice on your wall and make mistakes when you first get started! You can always paint over it once you've found the tool that works for you.
Lisboa Tile Stencil by Jami Marsoun
Jami wanted to create a unique yoga/office space in the house she is renovating. A custom floor stencil was the perfect addition.
She says, “The space turned out exactly as I imagined. It’s my favorite room in the house!”
Jami used 4 SW paint colors for the floor stencil project: Pier, Peacock Plume, Dried Edamame over Coffee bean. She “aged” the look with a wash of tinted water and sealed the floor with 2 coats of Satin Polyurethane.
Samarqand Suzani Damask Wall Stencil by Karla Zarbo
Karla needed to make a change and wanted to tie in the color from 2 adjoining spaces in this dining room.
The Samarqand stencil is multiple overlays, which allows you to create a very intricate pattern using multiple colors. It’s a bit more time consuming (this project took about a month) but the stencil results were well worth it and now she can enjoy this custom wallpaper look for years to come!
Upscaled Marhaba Tile Stencil by Jennifer Stercula
Jennifer’s sunroom needed a huge refresh-as you can see from the “before” photo. They had lived too long with the same bland and boring paint colors and she thought a stencil would be perfect for her concrete floor painting project.
She says, “My sunroom has become my favorite place to hang out in our house. It’s such a vibe! And every single person who walks in wants to hang out there. They are shocked I was able to stencil the entire floor in one day all by myself!”
She use Red Earth by Farrow and Ball for the stencil paint and now has a room with elevated ambiance that also brings the bohemian vibes she was going for.
Summer Field Cottage Stencil by Callie Scariano
Callie says, “I love the look of wallpaper and this stencil gave me the look I wanted for a fraction of the cost and completely transformed the space.”
Her wall stencil tip: Take your time lining up the stencil pattern and use light coats of paint for the cleanest finish. Don’t forget to wipe the back of the stencil after each repeat for the best results”.
Togo Fern Stripe Wall Stencil by Diane Audia
Diane wanted to add a fun and colorful accent to her guest bedroom and our Togo Fern Stripe wall stencil in a fresh green color sealed the deal. It took a “basic” bedroom and added a touch of “resort style” and it looks amazing with the black accents too!
Diane says, “Stenciling is a great, colorful, fun and inexpensive way to accent a wall, furniture or floors for any room in your home.”
