How to Prep and Stencil a Concrete Floor

Do you ever feel like ripping out your old carpet and starting fresh, but your budget isn’t cooperating? Even if replacing carpet or installing hardwood or tile is out of your budget, you can still have beautiful flooring! CoCo from The Crowned Goat knew her worn carpet in her bedroom definitely had to go (and her allergies along with it!). Instead of replacing what she ripped out, she kept the concrete beneath exposed and stenciled it with Floor Stencils. Check out her bedroom before the makeover and wait to be WOW’ed!

To prep the underlying concrete for painting, she removed the carpet tack strips, nails, sanded any old paint, and patched any cracks. She then cleaned away the dust and painted a basecoat of Valspar’s Porch and Floor Paint in Ultra White.

CoCo says, “We knew pretty early on we wanted our concrete floor to have a tile pattern that would have an elegant feel we could easily mix with our Southern style.” She browsed our Floor Stenciling Ideas and fell in love with the pretty Lisboa Tile Stencil.

If you are new to stenciling or need a refresher, here at Royal Design Studio we have plenty of video tutorials and instructions dedicated to helping both beginner DIY’ers and pro decorators. Even though CoCo had already stenciled curtains before, she was new to stenciling concrete floors so she watched the video How to Stencil a Concrete Floor in 10 Easy Steps before she got started.

She used Valspar’s Porch and Floor Paint in Cathedral Stone to stencil the large tile design directly onto the floor. She says, “Royal Design Studio Stencils has a fun feature on their stencils called registration marks to help you know where to reposition the stencil as you’re moving it from place to place.” There is also a How to Use Registrations Marks video!

Since CoCo was using a paint specifically for floors, it wasn’t necessary to use a sealer afterwards. However, with any other paints we recommend sealing over your stenciled floor with a polyurethane sealant topcoat.

CoCo LOVES her stenciled floor and how it adds to her bedroom makeover. She says, “I can’t believe how much this Lisboa Tile Stencil changed not only the look of the concrete floors but the look of the entire bedroom.”
