The IKEA Rast dresser seems to be the DIYer's favorite project. And why not? It’s super affordable, so who wouldn’t own a RAST chest? But that doesn't mean it has to be cookie cutter. This dresser can be dressed up in an endless array of ways. The easiest way to add your own personal touch to a plain jane piece is with Royal Design Studio furniture stencils. With these stencil patterns, you can paint any design and colorway you want. For this DIY tutorial, watch the video below to learn how to stencil a modern tribal color block design…
Supplies:
- Opposites Attract Modern Tribal Furniture Stencil
- Behr paint color samples in Cool Ashes, Sunny Side, and Carbon
- Royal Stencil Brushes in 1 ½” and ¾”
- Foam roller with tray, paint brush, painter’s tape, paper towels, and screw driver
Step 1: Remove the drawers from the dresser and set them aside. Load a foam roller with the Carbon paint color and paint the structure of your furniture piece with two coats. Use a small painted brush to touch up the areas where the roller can’t reach. Allow to dry between coats.
Step 2: Remove the knobs from the drawers using a screw driver. Place and secure the furniture stencil on the right side the front the top drawer with painter’s tape.
Step 3: Load a 1 ½” stencil brush with Cool Ashes paint and offload any excess paint onto a paper towel. Use painter’s tape to mask off the stencil areas you will later stencil with another color. Stencil the elements you wish to stencil using a medium to light pressure. Remove the tape used to mask.
Step 4: Repeat step 3 with the Sunny Side up paint color.
Step 5: Reposition the furniture stencil and align the second repeat perfectly by using the built-in registration marks on the stencil. Continue stenciling the design with the yellow color and then switch back to the grey color so that you create a color block effect.
Step 6: Paint the second drawer with two coats of Sunny Side Up paint using a paint brush or foam roller. Allow to dry between coats.
Step 7: For the third drawer, repeat step 3 but stencil the right side with the grey paint color first and then switch to the yellow paint color.
Step 8: Paint the knobs with black paint and allow to dry. Then put your Ikea hack back together!
